In the end the most effective should be used, but I defiantly don't like the idea of more nuclear power stations.
certainly agree with you.
did i read that gordon brown wants to encourage more nuclear power stations?
I wouldn't be surprised. I think the government just want us to have our own supply of power, so we don't need to rely on Russia, and they will want the most efficient even if it's nuclear. I'm not sure nuclear stations would be very cheap to build though.
I have mixed feelings about them. I saw part of one on the back of a huge lorry and thought it was a nuclear weapon, it was enormous. They are supposed to be putting several "farms" up near where I live. Someone is bound to be making some kind of profit from it and I bet its not our leccy bills that get the benefit, that is what bugs me.
i think that's another reason I like them, because they are so huge!
I'm 100% with you on that.
Great!
They are OK by me. We have spent a week quite close, no noise and you find yourself watching them.
Do they kill birds? Or is that propaganda from the anti's. Surely they are A. Too big. B. Too slow. Birds can see and avoid a fine fishing line.
I don't really know about the birds thing, it's just what I've heard. I hope you are right.
I thought I would do a litle research. There are two sides of course. the following seems reasonable to me.
'Wind Turbines pose little threat to birds, there is little real evidence here or overseas that bird strikes on Wind Turbines present any real problem providing the Turbines are placed with care and thought. The Americans who in the 80’s built several Wind Farms in California have largely caused the concern regarding bird strikes. These Wind Farms were built without consideration of aesthetic or environmental issues and caused many problems including bird kills. The Wind industry worldwide has learnt from this experience and no reputable Wind Farm Developer would consider the wall to wall Wind Turbine option. It is unlikely that any Council or State Government would allow this type of development. If we are really concerned about the plight of Birds perhaps we should be looking at Cats, Cars and power lines.'
Some are bigger than others! I dont think its a myth about the bird thing, we have enough nuclear crap up here so maybe it would be a good thing...I am just not so sure they are as effective as they make out..sorry being a bit cynical..
I've also heard they are not too effective, as Kevin says maybe tidal power is better?
Yep I think so , plenty of that up here in the winter and its getting worse each year, so maybe that is the postive side to the storms and stuff. Or maybe its more scientific and the storms are not helpful, who knows..
Killing birds is a big no no! ![]()
Defiantly not good!
They're soothing but in a spooky way - as if you landed on an alien planet and you know all the aliens have gone away for the weekend so you're all alone and in awe.
Hi, im doing some research for bbc's The One Show and we are doing a film called beautiful ugly about windfarms. I need people who would like to be involved or who have a particular view on whether wind farms are beautiful or ugly.
Please email me if you live near a wind farm or have a strong opinion on whether they are beautiful or Ugly.
My email is sarah@reallife.co.uk.

they are not efficient, one secured nuclear station is better than plenty of expensive turbines touching nature landscape.
Yes, also to meet British energy needs they'd have to be built all over the place, not to mention the most prime spots for them tend to also be some of the most pristine unspoilt areas.
I'de rather go with nuclear power plants, there would be significantly less of them for more energy efficiency, and for those not in the know, nuclear power plants are safe, modern reactors make meltdowns and the spread of radioactive contamination impossible, but a shoddy soviet era plant in Ukraine melts down and suddenly everyone thinks nuclear = dirty.
Oooo dirty super-heated steam, dirty thing you...
I would prefer a mix of alternatives that heavily rely on nuclear, along with geothermal, clean-coal and other methods. Wind may play its part but in all honesty relying on an inefficient primitive medieval power-source seems to go against the spirit of environmentalism and conservation as well as advancing human technology to the point where its efficient and clean. You don't save the environment by bulldozing the nicer bits and sticking ugly white poles on them.

they are beautiful but i'm not sure i'd like that view from my bedroom window!
i'm coming round to the idea that we would be better off investing in tidal power, but haven't got a clue which is more effective.
